He is to mind Sweetheart, and to keep her from trouble, he has decided that he will do the directing of where and what to eat. As the plains open out in front of them, Laetes is heedless of the gigantic Leopard's attempts to be a stealthy hunter. He merely beelines for one of the herds the villagers keep.
