There--they do not have to. They have not been condemned for not finishing, they do not have to, and still, a churning of emotion rises in the guts they don't truly have. It cannot be called burning, they know what burning from the inside out feels like in vivid detail, but it is warm and sickening.
Their knees scrape across the floor as they settle back again.
